Manager - Tips

The Coach works with the players. The Manager looks after the rest.

This means you:

  • along with the coach, are the designated contacts for the team;

  • communicate with the players/parents between games;

  • perform game day duties including completing Match Cards and payment of Match Fees – or organise a delegated person to do this for you. This person needs to know how fulfil these duties as mistakes can cause the club to be fined.

Communication

You need to work out a good method of communication with the team - be it e-mail addresses and/or mobile phone numbers. Examples of communication include:

  • reminder texts/emails about location/timing of next game (don’t rely on children to pass this on) requesting confirmation if players are/not coming (to ensure you have the numbers for the game and to decide on whether any players need to be borrowed);

  • last minute changes to games;

  • letting players/parents know about cancelled training due to current weather conditions;

  • forwarding information passed on from the club, including issues to do with spectator behaviour expectations, Duty Day, etc.

Game Day

Below are things to organise:

1.      Before the Game Day

  • For Away matches, the manager should get the match fee money from the Treasurer (handed out at the monthly Coach/Managers meetings). This is not required for Home matches.

  • Make sure all players know where they are meant to be, and when (ie how long before the game is meant to start).

  • Know how many players cannot come, and with the Coach, organise extra players if required. Remember, if you borrow a player you will need the OK from that player's coach/manager and need to have their ID card. Also remember the rules regarding players who play "up" 3 times.

  • Know who has, and is bringing, the playing shirts to the game (have a schedule for players/parents to wash and return the playing shirts). Players are not to wear playing shirts to or from the game, but must hand them in at the end of each game.

2.      Before the Game

  • Match Card: Complete the Match Card as far as able before the game is played. For competition games (ie not small sided games) this will need to be done before the referee takes it for the game. See the Completing the Match Card link.

3.      At the Field

  • Organise a spectator (not Coach or Manager) to be the Team Official and wear the Team Official vest. The role of this person is to ensure the spectators for the team are behaving appropriately;

  • Check the opposition’s rego cards BEFORE the game. The opposition is only required to show their cards before the game. You cannot dispute the correctness of the players on the field once the game starts. Have your cards ready for inspection, if required.

  • All Coaches and Managers should wear their Photos IDs around the neck. Club can provide lanyard and plastic sleeve for IDs.

4.      After the Game

  • Collect the playing shirts and hand them on to the player/parent responsible for washing them next;

  • Final sign-off of Match Card after the game;

  • Pay Match Fees (if playing an Away match).

  • NB If anything of concern has happened during the game that the team feels should be raised to the club, please direct any concerns to the Secretary. If the team feels any matters should be  taken to the MDSFA, this MUST be done through the Secretary of the club. Macarthur will not look at any correspondence that does not come through this path.

End of Season

  • Please ensure the playing shirts and other vests are washed before being returned to the club. Just think - who wants to get these next year if they have not been washed before being stored?

  • Either Coach or Manager needs to return the kit at the end of the season. There will be call for these (by e-mail) when the Equipment Officer is ready to sign them in.
